These are the Insiders who will be available 24/7 and know everything there is to know about the neighbourhood. All our insiders are actually from the neighbourhood. So whether you’re looking for the most romantic restaurant on the block or the best place to buy gifts for the home front, all you have to do is ask.
Mario loves Amsterdam and its history. Before becoming a YAYS Insider, he was a boy scout, a tour guide and a candy maker. His favourite place in Amsterdam is the kinderboerderij of Westerpark, a little city farm unknown to many locals. Even on a day off, he loves to hang out in the neighbourhood with his daughter or his friends, discovering hidden gardens. Mario speaks Mexican Spanish and Texan English, knows a lot of Polish words and is working on his Dutch.
Elana loves foreign films, listening to songs in languages she does not understand, and telling jokes in Afrikaans with the occasional South African traveller. She can be quiet but don’t get her started about food, she could talk about the topic for hours – asking her to recommend a place for dinner is a great idea, if you have time to spare. After work, you can find Elana enjoying a cold craft beer at her favourite brewery in the neighbourhood. She speaks English, Afrikaans, Dutch, and she is learning Polish.
When he is not managing his YAYS aparthotel in Amsterdam East, Thomas can be found flying model aircraft, watching one of his cats take a shower (don’t ask us, ask him) or enjoying the vibe at NDSM, his favourite spot in Amsterdam and one of the hippest cultural hubs in the city. Ask him anything about the neighbourhood in English, French, Dutch, or Brabants. You could try in Spanish, Russian and German, too.
Przemek loves to have a laugh with guests staying at YAYS. You’ll hear them joke in the lobby in English, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Slovakian or Portuguese. A real (multilingual) people person by day, and a solitary undiscovered artist on his time off, you’ll find him look for inspiration in the leafy parks of the neighbourhood, taking in the atmosphere of the canals in the centre of Amsterdam.

Street numbers and postal addresses are a modern thing. Although it may be hard for us to imagine life before them, we have to thank their delayed appearance in history for the existence of the beautiful gable stones that decorate the facades of Dutch historical centres.
